Entomological research

Project 1) Multi-Year Distributional Study of Wood County Lepidoptera

Robert J. Nuelle, Jr. and Robert J. Nuelle, III with ETNHC assistance are conducting comprehensive Lepidotera surveys of two primary habitats in the Wood County. In 2012 they contributed over 55 new County Records for Wood County, Texas to the Lepidopterists Society Season Summary Database.

The surveys are comprehensive and encompass both daylight and nocturnal collecting on the Hardwood Bottom Land areas and the Sandyland Prairies.

It is our expectation, based on early results, that in 2013 we will contribute nearly 200 new county records and possibly chronicle several new species from Wood County.

Regarding East Texas as a whole - these rich and unique areas have never been adequately sampled and in conjunction with work being done by the team we expect a better and more significant picture of the native fauna to emerge over the next 5 years.

Project 2) Studying Peigler's Buck Moth on the coast of Texas

Robert J. Nuelle, Jr. and Robert J. Nuelle, III have been studying hemileuca peigleri -- Peigler's Buck moth in Calhoun County since 2005. After 10 years of roadside research we obtained permission and cooperation from the amazing folks at The natire Conservancy. We are now able to work with them on their newly acquired 17,351 acre tract of land known as the Powderhorn Ranch.  We have an iNaturalist Project running and a crowd funding project at Experimet .com -- please check it out!!!
